THE AEGEAN PIRATES The history of 15 Squadron SAAF in WW2 Dr Stefaan Bouwer Dr Gerlad Thompson
Only 500 printed so they will be out of print soon.
This is a detailed account of and tracks the history, movements, the pilots, crews and the aircraft of 15 Squadron SAAF. From their inception, to their service in East Africa now Ethiopia to North Africa, to the Aegean Islands where they received their nick name The Aegean Pirates and on to Northern Italy and then the close of WWII. The nickname comes about as part of their missions of picking off the wooden single masted ships which plied the coastal inlets of the island chain. From their initial seconded SAA Junkers Ju86s through various types of second hand aircraft, which by all accounts for in their allotted missions. The first of which was the spotting of the SS Watusi a German coaster heading east south of Cape Town. The book is packed with information, painstakingly gleaned from the SAAF archives and records office, as well as surviving members, their friends and families. Not just a history but also a reference work, with colour scheme notes, profiles, individual aircraft details and histories. Packed with original photos and colour profiles by Piet van Schalkwyk. It is a labour of love by both authors and a fascinating book for anyone interested in SAAF squadron history. Not a novel but a concise reference work. Hard Cover, illustrated throughout, $85 VLAMGAT Authored By Brig Gen. Dick Lord NOW AVAILABLE!
The Story of the Mirage F1 in the South African Air Force Vlamgat, literally ‘flaming hole’ in Afrikaans, was the nickname the South African Air Force (SAAF) gave to the Mirage F1, its formidable frontline jet fighter during South Africa’s long ‘border wars’ in South West Africa (Namibia) and Angola from the late 1960s to the late 1980s. Battling Soviet MiG-21s and -23s over African skies, the Vlammies, the Mirage pilots as they were affectionately known, acquitted themselves with distinction and honour. Vlamgat—The story of the Mirage F1 in the South African Air Force is a gripping account of these pilots and their deeds of bravery; their experiences are authentically related with accuracy, humour and pathos—by the author, himself a Vlammie. As Willem Hechter, former Chief of the SAAF, says: “Vlamgat deserves a place of pride in the long history of this, the second oldest air force in the world.” Vlamgat is the gripping story of the South African jet fighter pilots in action during the tense years of the bush war. Their experiences are authentically told with accuracy, humour and pathos - by an author who writes from the cockpit. The South African Air Force during the Border War Written by eminent air force veteran,
Brigadier General Dick Lord, this is a work not to be missed. "From
Fledgling to Eagle" charts the effectiveness of the SAAF as a combat
unit at a time when its size was limited and most of its equipment
outdated. It's a thumping read with a foreword from none other than
Jan Breytenbach, the SADF's Parabat legend and founder of the Recce's.

An aviation career in the Royal Naval Fleet Air Arm, United States Navy, and the South African Air Force. This book traces an extraordinary career through nearly four decades of military aviation. Dick Lord, well known as an aviation raconteur, tells a tale of military flying at its best. He covers, in amusing detail, the life of a carrier pilot in both the Royal Naval Fleet Air Arm and the United States Navy. His unusual career then led to combat in Southern Africa as a Mirage F1 squadron commander. He later rose to the rank of Brigadier General in the South African Air Force.
